When I had spoken about the usual excuses we make to get out of working out, the one I have genuine empathy for is, "But it's raining...!"
In a city where monsoon can last upto 6 months, "but its raining" can knock you off your fitness game for a long time. But, that doesn't mean I disagree that rain is a bloody nuisance and motivation killer, as far as exercising is concerned. I won't lie that I did not whale-out (its a real thing. I invented it) for most part of the day. I mean, come on!
But then, guilt struck. Two consecutive days of missing workout and an entire day of whale-ing (wherein you very productively lie around at home all day contemplating the meaning of life) was enough for me to get up and take to Pinterest in search of some at-home workout inspiration. I found this really easy Tabata set and I LOVED it. | On a separate note, does Pinterest ever disappoint n delivering inspiration? NEVER! | So, anyway..

It took me about 15 minutes to complete 3 sets with no rest between the first two sets and a minute's rest between set 2 & 3. The exercises are pretty basic but it got my heart pumping and the blood rushing. I feel 3-4 more repetitions followed by a 60-90 secs forearm plank would be a good lazy-day/ busy-day at-home workout.
It may not be a grueling set, but sometimes when motivations are low or obstructions are high, a little effort goes a long way in keeping morale in check.
For those not familiar with the exercises, here is some help courtesy YouTube channels of fitnessblender, howcast and popsugar fitness

After the well deserved weight-slap and heartfelt moping session thereafter, it was time to get back on the health game.
While I am trying to make bigger efforts that I'd rather not jinx by talking, I took up this fun challenge to complete this June.
Cassey Ho is one of the top fitness bloggers in the world and I find her site very informative and useful. I also like her as a person. She doesnt come across those weight loss tyrants and makes it look all fun & play. I even have the blogilates app on my phone which has some nifty videos that are a huge help for at-home workouts.
So when I saw this challenge on the blog I thought, why the hell not!
As it happens, I am familiar with most of the stretches barring a few. E.g. sooooo not excited about Day 13 for instance. Yikes!
Its Day 5 and so far the only problem I am having is finding someone to photograph me! I have been doing the stretches in the morning when all I have for company is my rubber plant :|
My big plan is to repeat previous stretches before adding the stretch-of-the-day, creating a series. So basically on Day 30, I'll be doing 30 stretches at a stretch (pun totally intended)!
AMBITIOUS, I know! But its been fun so far. Every day after posting my photo I check the hashtag and its amazing to see so many, many posts! Its like a virtual club of like minded people.
I am tad embarassed to share the photos on facebook for the larger world to so they are limited to Instagram.
Is it weird to do something like this? Especially the social media posting? Is it exhibitionist or motivating?

In an earlier post I had talked about how all good intentions of getting healthy are usually met with stronger than steel excuses that are sometimes are worth taking a deeper look into but mostly they just plain lazy excuses. Period.
Its been six years since I have been on this whine. I noticed my overweight at 55. Today I am 67. What I consistently done in these 6 years is whine and worry about this. What I have not done is an honest to god effort. And the top two excuses were...*drumrolls*
Time: There are 24 hours in a day. My dermat pleaded me to just do thirty minutes of brisk walking promising results good results not just for my skin but overall wellbeing. Thirty minutes from twenty four hours! Can I give you some more good news? This doesn't have to be everyday. Thrice a week is all she asked for. Its not it. But its a start.
Let me break it down further: there are 1,00,800 minutes in a week. One lakh and eight hundred!
And all we need are just 90 minutes. Ninety.
If we cannot manage even this much then its all just sham isn't it?
Place: Not everyone has the means to pay for a gym membership. Gym memberships cost more than my monthly rent these days. And lets say you do manage to get the membership, there is no guarantee you'd actually get there. Ask me, I cringe at the thought of how much of my hard-earned monies have gone to waste over the years out of sheer laziness.
And let's say you are this awesome soul who dedicatedly reaches the gym everyday. Gyms nowadays are seeing so much traffic that the common slots like early morning or early evening are terribly crowded that you end up waiting around for a couple of hours to use 45mins. Everyone may not have that kind of time to accomodate this.
Basically, what I am trying to say is, excuses will be in plenty. But if the intention is there, there is a way.
If there is even a small part of you that relates with this then please let me tell you, its not worth it. The worrying and whining when actually not making an honest effort...all you'll gain is depression and more weight. Its all I think about and its all I feel guilty about day in and day out. That's no way to live. I am making an effort. I could use some motivation from you.
Try this. Start with two sets a day. See how far you can go by end of month.
START.
Let me know how it goes.
Love
S
